Hmm . . . I’m not sure what to make of this.

For months there’s been much talk about the new web series Venice – a series I thought would expand on the Otalia romance developed in the canceled soap opera Guiding Light. After viewing this teaser, it doesn’t appear as if Otalia fans will be seeing much action between their two favorite daytime soap stars. As I understood it during all the pre-launch hoopla, the characters’ names would change but fans would finally get to see their relationship blossom. I don’t get that from the teaser.

I can’t really tell what Venice’s storyline will be from this 1:39 clip, but I bet the series will provide lesbian bloggers with plenty to talk about. What we will be talking about remains to be seen.

In the meantime, please don’t forget about all those great lesbian web series out there that have cleared a smooth trail for Venice to follow.

The one great thing I did notice about the Venice teaser was that indie musician Jen Foster does the series theme song. It’s a much better theme song than the one The L Word used. It’s so much easier on the ears.

While doing research for an article I’m writing for the Examiner, I learned The L Word is becoming a reality tv show. The show is scheduled to start airing sometime in 2010:

THE REAL L WORD: Los Angeles will follow a group of real-life, high-profile, left coast lesbians as they go about their daily lives, at work and play. The producing team plans to show viewers that the cast can be every bit as glamorous, fashionable, fabulous and even as cutthroat as their celebrated-but-fictional counterparts.

We are currently seeking ladies from all walks of life to be the pioneering voices in this important series. Must be based in Los Angeles or moving soon to the area.

We want all types, from the power of Bette to the mojo of Shane.

Are they admitting that The L Word was never a show designed to feature everyday lesbians, but instead “high-profile, left coast lesbians” who are rich, thin and beautiful? I sure think they are!

Who’s happy about this new reality tv show? I’ll tell ya who. All those lesbian webmasters whose web content was 90% related to The L Word, that’s who. Those websites experienced amazing growth by piggybacking off The L Word’s success, especially AfterEllen.com.

In the meantime, I hope all the lesbian web series that sprung up after The L Word’s demise will continue to grow their online audience. Personally, I’d rather watch a lesbian web series than watch a reality tv show full of rich, white, left coast lezzies. Call me crazy (or bitchy, you pick).

Update: I failed to mention that the biological mom became a born again Christian and claims she is no longer a lesbian. That information is mentioned in the article on the men’s web site and in the article where I grabbed the summary.
—————————–

An interesting new column on a men’s web site caught my attention today: The Rise of Lesbian Custody Battles. The author is comparing bitter lesbian mothers to straight mothers who keep their children from a former partner and co-parent just because they’re angry the relationship has ended:

Mothers are often able to convince courts to allow them to drive decent, loving fathers out of their children’s lives by employing anti-father/pro-mother stereotypes and by portraying dads as abusive or unfit. But there are no abusive males or bad dads in lesbian custody battles. Nevertheless, when two lesbians agree to have a child together and the relationship goes sour, the lesbian biological mom often does the exact same thing to her ex as heterosexual mothers do.

In case you don’t recall this case, here’s a summary:

In a case that has attracted national attention because it highlights the starkly different treatment lesbian and gay parents experience across state lines, Lambda Legal, ACLU of Virginia and Equality Virginia appealed a case in Virginia on behalf of a woman who is being denied visitation with her child despite a clear court order from Vermont.

Janet Miller-Jenkins is seeking to enforce a court order saying she must have regular visitation with the two-year-old daughter she and her former partner, Lisa Miller-Jenkins, had when the two women were joined in a Vermont civil union. After the women ended their relationship, Lisa moved to Virginia with the women’s daughter, and she asked a Vermont court to dissolve the couple’s civil union and sort out custody of the child. When that Vermont court ordered visitation for Janet, Lisa filed a new lawsuit in Virginia court, successfully using that state’s antigay marriage law to have herself declared the child’s sole legal parent. The conflicting court orders — one from Vermont ordering regular visitation for Janet, and the other from Virginia naming Lisa the sole parent — led to the appeal, which asks a state court to overturn the Virginia ruling.

The appeal cites the federal Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act and Virginia’s Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act. In this case, both laws make it clear that the Vermont court alone has jurisdiction in the matter and cannot be interfered with — and the federal kidnapping law requires that the Vermont order be enforced in Virginia.

My exhusband and I have joint legal custody of our children; I have primary placement. That ruling came, not because I employed any anti-male or anti-father tactics, but because I was the primary caregiver for years while my exhusband spent 3/4 of the year traveling the world on a Navy ship.

I’m annoyed by mothers – any mother – who takes a child away from a co-parent out of spite. When you decide to co-parent a child with someone you love, you have to keep in mind that one day you might not love that person anymore. Regardless, even if you don’t love that person, your child still does.

I wonder how all those self-proclaimed feminists will address a biological mother taking a child from a lesbian co-parent out of spite. If they truly support the rights of all women, which woman will they side with in this case?

I just woke my partner (it’s 3am) to tell her that SistersTalk is listed in Kathy Belge’s 10 Lesbians to Follow on Twitter list. Normally, I wouldn’t wake her for these sorts of things, but I’m so completely honored (and excited!) to be on such an impressive list with these ladies: Suze Orman, Melissa Etheridge (her street team), Tegan and Sara, Rachel Maddow, Ellen DeGeneres, Dorothy Snarker, Girlports, National Center for Lesbian Rights and Kate Clinton.

What Kathy says about SistersTalk:

Genia Stevens, host of Sister Talk radio is on the edge for me. She tweets a lot. Many times a day. But I keep following her because what she’s saying is so informative. She doesn’t just push her show, like some other radio hosts do. She tweets about important news and events in the LGBT community. Like “Study: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender middle school students harassed more – http://tr.im/A4Ee” and “Memphis Billboard Featuring Gay Marine Vandalized – http://tr.im/zZ4N.” Sometimes she’s interactive: “Question for the lesbians: Do you think lesbians have sex on the first date more often that we like to admit it?”

That’s a pretty accurate description of my tweetin’ habits. I try to be informative and provide as much news as I can regarding the LGBTQ community. I also try to interact as often as I can with my followers. I’ve asked my followers questions about their favorite music, their favorite books, their favorite movies and films, their sexual activities (I know, I’m nosey) and what they’d like to hear me and my partner discuss on the She Said, She Said episodes on SistersTalk Radio. Interacting with my followers helps me remain true to the reason I started SistersTalk Radio; my partner and I want to host what we consider to be the most diverse LGBTQ online talk radio show you’ll find anywhere on the ‘net. We can’t do that if we’re not getting input from the people who listen to our show.

Yes, I tweet a lot. But I talk waaaay more than I tweet, so consider yourself lucky you don’t have to actually listen to me. I’m sure my partner wonders if I come with an off switch. I do, but I won’t tell her where to find it. She’ll have to figure that one out on her own.

Author Cheril N. Clarke examines love, self-loathing and dirty politics in her novel Losing Control. Toss in a closeted lesbian, a closeted gay man, a confused married woman, an angry husband and an ambitious backstabbing campaign volunteer and you’ll be glued to the pages of Losing Control for hours and hours.

Clarke does an excellent job of examining the coming out process: from denial and self-loathing to the moment every gay person finally experiences full acceptance of who s/he really is. Every emotion her characters feel, you feel: angst, intense sexual arousal, anger, frustration and joy.

Losing Control is a touching, dramatic and tumultuous lesbian love story. Readers will want to skip ahead to learn the outcome of Brianna and Pamela’s relationship because the sexual tension will drive any warm-blooded person insane. The last page of this novel will leave readers asking, “What? Is that it?” and anxiously waiting for a sequel.
