Gaskins chats about Project 1 – a documentary of one woman cycling 12,000 miles to create a national HIV prevention ride. The ride is also designed to foster community and empower women to take control of their life and body.

In 1992, women accounted for an estimated 14% of adults and adolescents living with AIDS in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. By the end of 2005, this proportion had grown to 23%. Currently women account for 26% of the new HIV diagnoses (Center for Disease Control and Prevention June 2007). Woman focused HIV prevention strategies and policies must be created. Women and girls must be empowered to take control of their bodies and make choices that are in line with a healthy way of life.

In the fight against HIV, women and girls have been overlooked. Prevention is not only about safe sex. It includes the factors that influence relationships and sexual behavior from low self-worth to sexual assault to domestic violence to poverty. Project 1 gives the issue a voice and face with whom other women and girls can identify, provides concrete ways to become active in our own rescue and creates a community of people working for prevention reaching beyond cultural and age boundaries with the understanding that HIV/AIDS affects women from all strata of society.

The ride spans over the course of four days. It was her first century ride (as her fellow riders call it), and she had the biggest smile on her face when she crossed the finish line.

I spoke with Andrea last night via phone and she expressed concern that she might not be able to finish the 103-mile segment because of all the problems she had with her bike on day one (65 miles) and day two (75 miles). But, she did it – and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

While I waited for her, I snapped lots of pictures of other riders crossing the finish line. Spectators and crew members rang cow bells and cheered every single rider on as (s)he came in. Occassionally a local rider (someone not participating in the ride) would pass by us and spectators would cheer until the rider smiled, waved and yelled, “I’m a local.” Everyone cheered anyway.

AIDS Ride in Wisconsin. She allowed me to record our phone conversation when she called me to provide her daily update. Her fundraising goal was $1200 and as of this morning, her progress chart says she’s raised $1370! Woot! Woot!

The ride started this morning and will span over the course of 4 days. On day one, the riders will do 65 miles and stop at Argyle High School in Argyle, WI to camp overnight. On day two, the riders will do 75 miles and camp at Albany High School in Albany, WI overnight. On day 3, the riders will do 103 miles and stop at Columbus High School in Columbus, WI overnight. Day three is the century day – the day to acknowledge what it’s like to live with HIV/AIDS. And finally, day four is a 50 mile ride that brings the riders back to their starting place Madison, WI. If you’re near any of these areas, please stop by and give the riders some words of encouragement. If you see them along the highway, honk your horn and show your support.
