LGBT Equality is Coming, But It Won’t Happen Tomorrow
Filed Under Barack Obama, Gays, Lesbians, LGBT, Politics, Race, Women's Issues | 7 Comments
A lot of people in the gay community are expecting President Obama to focus exclusively on issues related to the LGBT community:
While Obama’s official presidential website does highlight issues of workplace discrimination, expansion of hate crime laws to include attacks based on gender identity and sexual orientation, and combating the stigma of HIV/AIDS, these symbolic gestures aren’t enough. He must also appoint cabinet members and surround himself with people who can enact policies that affect the daily realities of many LGBT individuals.
If Obama surrounds himself with people whose main agenda is equality for LGBT people, then who will take care of people who have needs different than those related to sexual orientation? Women. Blacks. Hispanics. Disabled people. Children. The poor. The homeless.
I’m aware that the needs of the LGBT community have been largely ignored and often trampled on, but we can’t (and we shouldn’t) expect a complete about-face on LGBT issues. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 didn’t see full realization in the south until at least 1988. The high school I attended in Georgia wasn’t completely desegregated until 1988, when our high school principal announced he would no longer allow separate Black and white proms or separate Black and white homecoming queens.
It’s obvious to me that those people in the LGBT community (mostly white men) who are expecting – and almost demanding – equality right now have never known what discrimination felt like until they told the world they were gay. The rest of the LGBT community (non-white males) are very familiar with what discrimination feels like because we knew that feeling long before we told the world we were gay. Most of us are aware that it will take some time to see a significant change for the LGBT community.
Equality for the LGBT community is coming, but it’s not happening overnight. In the meantime, the LGBT community has to continue to push forward and insist that the needs of the LGBT community are not ignored. What we should never do is insist that our needs come before anybody else’s needs in this country. That’ll just piss a whole lotta people off.

Wal-Mart Kiss Results in Military Discharge
Filed Under Barack Obama, Lesbians, LGBT, Politics | 6 Comments
Amy Brian served 9 years in the Kansas Army National Guard and she served in the Iraq war. Brian was recently discharged from the military under Clinton’s DADT policy when a civilian co-worker reported that they had watched Brian kissing another woman in the Wal-Mart checkout line.
Karma’s a bitch. That civilian co-worker will get what’s coming. That’s some serious negative energy.
I’m a Gulf War veteran. Dubya’s re-election in 2004 really hit me hard because I believe Dubya and all his cronies don’t give a shit about all the gays and lesbians who have served in the military for decades. The fact that Dubya used gay marriage as a wedge issue during the 2004 election made me really dislike this country and the 62 million dumbass Americans who voted for him.
Brian is one of 12,500 lesbian and gay servicemembers discharged between 1994 and 2007. I’m sure there are thousands more still in hiding – waiting for a nosey co-worker to run her mouth. Hopefully, Obama’s recent pause on repealing DADT will be extremely short.

Obama Backin’ Off DADT – For Now
Filed Under Barack Obama, LGBT, Politics | 2 Comments
I’m thinking this is a smart move, but I know all those Hillary-lovin’ homosexuals who criticize every move Obama makes will cry foul. President Obama is backing off on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) - for now:
. . . Obama, who pledged during the campaign to overturn the law, does not want to ask lawmakers to do so until the military has completed a comprehensive assessment of the impact that such a move would have on military discipline.
Then, the president hopes to be able to make a case to members of both parties that overturning the 1993 law would be in the best interest of national security.
I see this political maneuvering as a sign of great things to come. It will take some work to convince the right people that Clinton’s DADT is a horrible policy that’s more harmful than good. It’s a smart move to build support for repealing DADT – especially since the LGBT community also expects Obama to repeal the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), another gift from the Clintons.
If I hear one homosexual complain about Obama’s recent move on DADT, I will expect them to also bitch about Hillary Clinton refusing to support a full repeal of DOMA, the anti-gay law that she helped Barr draft when she was First Lady.
Back off my president, bitches!

We just finished our latest edition of the Bloggers You Should Know Series on SistersTalk Radio. Our guest tonight was Deb, author of the blog DebontheRocks.com: a blog about life, pop culture, sex, relationships, and politics with a satirical focus. She’s also a lesbian with two teenagers. She’s passionate about blogging, 2.0 life, and finding the next best thing.
The highlight of tonight’s show was Deb’s commentary on the Obamas breakin’ in every room of the White House. We wonder if we’ll see a whole buncha new Obama babies pretty soon.
You might also like Deb’s commentary about Rachel Maddow’s girlfriend. I thought it was a hoot.
Deb’s presenting at BlogHer 09 in Chicago, IL. She would love to see more queer women join her there. Contact her for more information. And by the way, I do plan to attend BlogHer this year.
Listen to the show now, or download the podcast and listen later.
Join us Sunday, Feb. 1 when we talk to lesbian funny lady Vickie Shaw.

Ty Creates Obama Daughter Dolls – First Lady Says ‘Oh Hell No!’
Filed Under Barack Obama, Business, Politics | Leave a Comment
Ty Inc., the maker of the infamous collectible Beanie Babies has created two dolls that look very similar to Sasha and Malia Obama. What are the dolls’ names? Why Sasha and Malia, of course! First Lady Michelle Obama is not happy about that. Mrs. Obama’s press secretary has stated that Mrs. Obama believes it’s “inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes.” Well, I think it’s inappropriate if you don’t have the parents’ permission.
The company has not denied that the dolls are modeled after the Obama daughters, but instead, Ty’s representative stated “there’s nothing on the girls that refers to the Obama girls.”
That’s PR talk for “we won’t confirm nor deny that we are trying to capitalize on this historic moment by creating dolls that look just like the Obama daughters.” Ty knows those dolls will make a shitload of money before they’ll be forced to pull them from the shelves. Once the dolls are no longer available to the public, anyone who owns one will have a doll worth a fortune in a few years. That means Ty can charge whatever the hell they want for those dolls – for now – because collectors will buy them as an investment.
The only good thing about all this is that the dolls don’t have exaggerated African features.

President Barack Obama
Filed Under Barack Obama, Politics, President Barack Obama | 4 Comments
I didn’t get a chance to watch the inauguration live because I was in court (again) dealing with child placement issues and child support. I married a jackass and I bore him children. There’s nothing I can do about that now.
I was driving home feeling very ticked off that I missed watching history in the making. During my 20 minute drive home from the courthouse, my friends started sending me celebratory text messages with comments like:
“Hell yeah! President Obama. Adios Bush!”
“We got us a new President. Finally!”
“This happy day calls for a happy dance.”
“God Bless America!” (Normally, I roll my eyes when I see that comment. Today I didn’t.)
What I was most proud of today is that the voice of pissed off gay America didn’t drown out the excitement of history in the making.
Congratulations, Mr. President.
