Who Wants to Bet Gays Will Push for Openly Gay Supreme Court Justice?

I was in bed by the time I saw a text regarding last night’s breaking news that Supreme Court justice David Souter is retiring. I couldn’t even muster up the energy to tweet about it – like these people.

The nation’s first Black president will get an opportunity to appoint a new Supreme Court justice. Hot damn!

But before any of you pop the cork on that special bottle of wine you’ve been saving for just this occassion, remember this: Souter, appointed by the first Republican Bush, is part of the court’s liberal wing. Anyone Obama appoints won’t drastically swing the court in one direction or another – unless Obama decides to surprise us all and do exactly the opposite of what we expect of him by appointing a conservative judge. It’s possible, right?

Which interest group do you think will make the most noise about Obama’s Supreme Court choice? Religious right-wing nutcases or one of the many gay groups that claim to represent the best interest of the LGBTQ community? Maybe one of the many women’s groups out there will rally for another female (preferably Black or Hispanic) on the high court. I’m guessing we’ll hear the most frequent and the loudest noise from the gays – especially after the whole Warren fiasco. Obama owes us one, right?

A disabled, half Black/half Hispanic, gay, conservative female appointee might just make everyone happy. Anybody know where we can find one?

    “A disabled, half Black/half Hispanic, gay, conservative female appointee” has my vote – assuming she’s vegan. ;)

    Some have been speculating it will be Bill Clinton, but I seriously doubt that… it would be a huge failure on Obama’s part if he were to do that.

    It’s very exciting though… I’m flustered at the thoughts of it all!

    Bill Clinton? WTF? Please say it ain’t so. I would be so disgusted if Obama appointed Clinton.

    This issue will keep the LGBTQ blogosphere busy for several months to come. Yey!
