The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C., denied a request to allow a gay rights group to cosponsor a pro-life conference on campus last Saturday, citing the university’s Catholic identity.

The Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians (PLAGAL) advocates the right to life as the basis of all other human rights. But the organization’s support for “gay rights”—including same-sex “marriage”—and its apparent condoning of homosexual activity run contrary to Catholic moral teaching [note the quotation marks around gay rights and marriage, placed there by the original author).

An undisclosed university representative told leaders of the Students for Life of America annual conference, which was held last Saturday, January 24, that the gay rights group’s mission statement “goes against the teachings of the Catholic Church,” according to an article today in the campus newspaper, The Tower. The article notes that CUA did not permit the group to co-sponsor the conference or set up an exhibit booth on campus, but still welcomed PLAGAL members to attend the conference. A CUA spokesman told The Cardinal Newman Society that “the essential elements of the Tower article are accurate.”

“CUA made a difficult but admirable decision in restricting PLAGAL’s activity on campus,” said Patrick Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. “We need a unified front in the fight against abortion, and PLAGAL has an important place in the pro-life movement. Nevertheless, CUA is a public witness to the Catholic faith, and its first obligation is to its students. PLAGAL has historically sought to convince pro-life Christians of its gay rights agenda, which in some respects opposes Catholic moral teaching.”

ProLiteracy, the nation’s leader in adult literacy programs and advocacy, today decried the exclusion of Title II of the Workforce Investment Act from the current economic stimulus package.

David C. Harvey, president of ProLiteracy, called on President Obama and Congress to include Title II of the Workforce Investment Act in the economic recovery proposal. “We applaud the efforts of our new president and Congress to craft a stimulus bill focused on creating new jobs,” Harvey said. “But it is imperative that they focus on the very people who will have the most difficulty finding jobs — low-literate workers. An effective recovery bill must provide adult literacy and employment training opportunities.”

Harvey pointed out that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to be reviewed by House subcommittees this week, funds job training services for at-risk youth, individuals with disabilities, and older Americans through Titles I, III, and IV of the Workforce Investment Act.

“But inexplicably, Title II, which focuses on adult education and literacy, was left out of the bill,” Harvey said. “Many of the nearly 3 million jobs lost during 2008 were held by individuals who need additional help with basic reading, math, or English skills in order to take advantage of the jobs that the Recovery Act will create.”

A recent U.S. Department of Education report estimates that 32 million adults in the U.S. don’t read well enough to fill out a job application without help. Title II, also known as the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, is the largest source of federal funding for programs that teach adults reading, writing, math, technology skills, and English as a Second Language (ESL).

“The previous administration did not prioritize low-literate adults’ needs, so the problems and numbers have only increased,” said Harvey. “It is now a new administration and new Congress focused on the economy and job recovery. A basic foundation of a strong, employable workforce is a literate workforce. Now is the time for the federal government to take action to address the issue of adult illiteracy and include Title II funding,” Harvey concluded.

I’m one of the few Twitter and Facebook lovers who still use MySpace – although I don’t do much more than post bulletins and flirt with my baby girl.

Critics are predicting that Facebook and Twitter will be the death of MySpace. That may be true, but I’m guessing one of MySpace’s problems is the ridiculous amount of stupid advertisements all over the place. Poorly written copy. Spelling mistakes. Washed out backgrounds and images. Blatantly offensive ads about weight loss, dating and bad teeth – to name a few – all targeting women over the age of 30 (that would be me!)

35 years old and overweight?
Obviously, the person who placed this ad decided to target women over the age of 35. Taking jabs at a woman’s age and her weight all in one swoop is not cool – and it won’t sell the product. It’ll just piss us off and create an opening for companies like Weight Watchers who take a much more sensitive approach to advertising to the female market.

single over 30?

Why yes! Yes I am over 30 years old and single. Am I bothered by that fact? Absolutely not.

gold diggers are us

This advertiser didn’t do a good job at targeting the right audience. I’m a lesbian. I’m not looking for a sugardaddie. The single straight girls ought to be bothered by the fact that this advertiser thinks you’re a gold digger (and stupid enough to believe that wealthy men are actually using the internet to find women who just want them for their money).

Obama

This ad is very misleading because once you click on it, it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Obama! This ad links to a web site that claims it will show you how to receive thousands of dollars in grants from the government – all for a small fee, of course. This ad is right up there with all the multi-level marketing/pyramid scheme scam artists that are hoping there’s enough stupid and desperate people in the world who will fall for this kinda crap.

Facebook allows advertising and it’s rumored that Twitter will soon start selling ad space. I’ve seen some ridiculous ads on Facebook too, but they’re not so big and annoying. They seem a lot less intrusive than the ads I see on MySpace. No one knows if Twitter will implement text-based ads, banner ads, or ads in their members’ update streams. I certainly hope they use MySpace as an example of what they shouldn’t do.

Ty Inc., the maker of the infamous collectible Beanie Babies has created two dolls that look very similar to Sasha and Malia Obama. What are the dolls’ names? Why Sasha and Malia, of course! First Lady Michelle Obama is not happy about that. Mrs. Obama’s press secretary has stated that Mrs. Obama believes it’s “inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes.” Well, I think it’s inappropriate if you don’t have the parents’ permission.

The company has not denied that the dolls are modeled after the Obama daughters, but instead, Ty’s representative stated “there’s nothing on the girls that refers to the Obama girls.”

That’s PR talk for “we won’t confirm nor deny that we are trying to capitalize on this historic moment by creating dolls that look just like the Obama daughters.” Ty knows those dolls will make a shitload of money before they’ll be forced to pull them from the shelves. Once the dolls are no longer available to the public, anyone who owns one will have a doll worth a fortune in a few years. That means Ty can charge whatever the hell they want for those dolls – for now – because collectors will buy them as an investment.

The only good thing about all this is that the dolls don’t have exaggerated African features.

I guess she’ll need that $11M to keep her accustomed to the lifestyle she was living while she was on the campaign trail. Flyin’ her entire family all over the place and staying in expensive hotels. Expensive hairdos. $150K wardrobe.

If I had the money, I’d pay her $11M to just go away.

This seems like a really shitty public relations strategy to me. Say something really stupid and racist, piss people off, get the news cameras out, and bingo! You have a shitload of free marketing for weeks. A certain Black lesbian blogger who hates white people does the same thing all the time. And, it seems to work for Ann Coulter just as well.

Ted Kefalinos, proprietor of Lafayette French Pastry, created Drunken Negro Cookies in honor of President Obama.

I’m guessing Kefalinos’s bakery – which sits in the core of NY’s gay scene – won’t suffer much at all. He’ll still have all those anti-Obama, Hillary-Clinton-lovin’ gay folks who continue to stop by – unless Kefalinos donated to Yes on 8 (or made unacceptable comments about gay people), then that’s a different story.

I heart this woman already.

Monica over at Transgriot posted the following today:

Feminism, according to a popular bumper sticker is the radical notion that women are people, too. Many feminists have forgotten over the years that the word ‘people’ also includes their Black, Latina, Asian and native sisters as well as their transgender ones.

While I wholeheartedly agree and support as a transwoman equality for women, I also noted the gulf between the predominately white feminist movement and women of color. I noted how they loudly and zealously rallied to the defense of Hillary Clinton for perceived sexist comments during last year’s primary, but were deafeningly silent when Michelle Obama was attacked.

Monica, they haven’t forgotten about us, girl. A lot of white feminists just don’t give a shit. There’s a difference.

I took a women’s studies course at Beloit College in 1999. The main textbook for the class was Herland – a book that suggests that eutopia is a land of white women only – women who are capable of procreating without using a man’s sperm to do so. When I asked my professor (Cynthia McCown) why the syllabus lacked any texts by and for women of color, the cranky snob had the audacity to smugly suggest that I (the lone non-white student in the class) make my final project a research project on women of color.

In other words, she didn’t give a shit; that was my job.

That professor is no longer at Beloit College. Thank gawd.

If it takes something like a newspaper refusing to run your gay wedding announcement to convince you that you should be involved in the fight for gay marriage rights, then so be it.

Marc Volenec and Peter Hamel are upset because their local Nebraska newspaper refused to publish their wedding announcement:

The newlyweds sent a picture of themselves holding the Sept. 23 edition of the Herald to the papers’ Community Connection website. The picture did appear on Omaha.com. But the formal announcement in the print edition was rejected.

“As a business decision, the Omaha World-Herald does not print same-sex marriage announcements.” company spokesperson Joel Long told The Reader. He said the company’s decision is not based on Nebraska’s law banning gay marriage or a specific corporate policy. “We decided we’re not going to do it.”

I wonder. If the couple wasn’t holding a picture of the newspaper their photo probably wouldn’t have been published either.

After the World-Herald refused to print the announcement, Volenec contacted Citizens for Equal Protection, a Nebraska non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender families. “I’m not really a get-on-a-soapbox type person, but you want to be a part of something that’s bigger,” he said.

Hey, I always say you have to be pissed off about something before you finally feel motivated to get involved in the fight for gay equality.

In the SistersTalk mailbox this afternoon:

In January of 2008, Echelon Business Media Inc., owner of Echelonmagazine.com created GayFranchise.com to bridge the gap between mainstream franchisors and the LGBT community. This site offers a directory of over 60 franchise opportunities in various categories, from coffee shops to financial planning franchises.

Despite some in our community who profess a policy of privacy when it comes to their sexual orientation at work, who we are in all aspects of our lives, comes out at the office. Whether it be the office Christmas party, or telling people what you did over the weekend, or even requesting domestic partner benefits, our sexual orientation eventually comes out at work. If this has become a problem for you in the past, it is all the more reason to own your own business.

GayFranchise gets your sexual orientation out of the way from the get-go. Our franchises are looking for a diverse array of franchisees. Your fear of being outed is completely alleviated from the moment you request more information. Gay neighborhoods are sprouting up all of the U.S., and having a gay-owned franchise in these areas are an added plus to the franchise owner as well as the master franchise.

The clients within the GayFranchise directory are targeting their opportunity towards the Gay community for a variety of reasons. Most members of our community are more available as the majority of us don’t have children. The amount of people with a college education skews very high in most polls. We also have an understanding of “risk” as it is risky enough as it is to come out of the closet.

Choosing to own a franchise rather than starting a business from scratch poses many advantages. Franchises already possess brand exposure in the market. This is one of the toughest jobs of any new entrepreneur. It presents an immediate credibility and reliability with your future customers. There is also no need to create a business plan from scratch. You are buying a “business in a box” as each opportunity has a proven and consistent system for you to follow. Lastly, there is always someone in your corner. Training is provided and it’s always nice to be able to call someone for the answers.

GayFranchise also lists several vendors who can assist you in making your purchase. Whether it’s one of our Capital Partners, Consultants or Attorneys, these companies stand by to aid you making your franchise ownership a reality.

So let this year be about broadening your horizons by researching other opportunities to your current state of employment and being prepared for whatever may come your way.

Once you own a franchise, feel free to post an announcement at GayWallet.com – a community of LGBTQ people and straight people who support gay and gay-friendly companies and organizations.

While reading Bush’s “War” on Terror Comes to a Sudden End, I was distracted by a satirical piece in the Onion:

Network news cameras covering Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony Tuesday captured Hillary Clinton silently moving her lips along with each word of the minute-long presidential oath of office. [source]

People A lot of white women keep asking me why I dislike H. Clinton so much. I can tell ya it didn’t always used to be that way. In 2004, I launched a pro-Hillary campaign that included contributing to the blog Blogs for Hillary. Between 2004 and 2006, I watched everything she did. She became my new research project. I was obsessed with learning everything about her.

And that, my dear readers, was the problem. The more I learned about her, the less I wanted to see her become POTUS. I’m really annoyed that a lot of large LGBT organizations know H. Clinton helped Barr draft DOMA, yet they haven’t said a word. Not one word. Instead, these organizations have encouraged a cult-like devotion to a woman who has never had anyone’s best interest in mind except her own. The same LGBT organizations that led the charge against Warren because he supported the passing of Prop 8 have remained silent about H. Clinton’s involvement in DOMA – a federal law that I would consider far worse than Prop 8. And the fact that H. Clinton has insisted that some parts of DOMA should remain intact makes me wonder if large LGBT organizations have some kind of financial allegiance that dictates they remain silent.

Yes, some people will argue that H. Clinton said whatever she thought she needed to say in her attempt to secure the Democratic party nomination. I will agree. H. Clinton always does what’s best for Hillary.
